That WorLD. tapes.
The stock of Cardiff-born rapper Deyah continues to soar thanks to the effortless and irresistible EP ‘That WorLD. tapes.’
An artist who has been garnering critical acclaim in the UK underground rap scene, Deyah has captivated audiences with her exquisite flow and wordplay; a true lyricist with blasé confidence flowing through every bar that she casually spits.
‘That WorLD. tapes’ is the third project that Deyah has unleashed upon our ears following on from 2019’s ‘Lover Loner’ and 2020’s ‘Care City’. This body of work, co-written and co-produced by Astronote, Jakwob and En Why Cee, is arguably the most focused and astute entry yet. Featuring the previously released ‘Ultimate Dinner Party’ and ‘HUSH’, both of which impressed listeners with dynamic vocals and laidback production, this four-pronged EP is another example as to why the rapper has gained the attention of major tastemakers like Annie Mac, Jack Saunders and DJ Target.
EP opener ‘Room 21’ combines modernistic drums with celestial chords and smooth bass as a backdrop for Deyah’s conversational, thought-provoking lyricism. ‘HUSH’ follows, with a beat draped in ambiguous awe and a vocal performance full of energy and attitude. ‘Jericho’ comes next with a grittier tone, clearly paying homage to the ominous production of early grime, featuring some great textural and musical variation. We are then treated to the showstopper; one of my favourite tracks of the year and the cut that saw me jump on the Deyah train - ‘Ultimate Dinner Party’. Every phrase fits perfectly, every flow cuts smoother than butter and the eerie synth creates a brilliantly subdued atmosphere. A superb track.
An explorative, nuanced and philosophical offering from a supremely talented artist, I’d recommend joining me on the Deyah Express. Who knows the final destination.
