Playtime
A string of breakout singles in 2017 marked SL as one of the most unique, exciting and idiosyncratic rappers in the UK. Now the Croydon rapper has hundreds of millions of streams to his name, an album and several EPs. After releasing a couple stray singles in 2021, SL is ending the year on a high-note.
With what seems like a return to a more simplistic style, ‘Playtime’ is full of quotables and catchy flows. “Got a new pack for my lunch, unzip it and twist it, it’s packing a punch”, for example, is one that sticks in your brain. The song almost sounds like you’re hearing a lullaby from the cast of Snatch.
The sparse sound signals a continuation from 2020’s ‘Selhurst SE25’ EP, largely produced by American superproducer Kenny Beats. SL’s unmistakable voice fits with production from Khari Dyer and A6ixTheProducer in a way that lends a nod to the Southern hip-hop of the US, whilst showing what London can bring to the table.
