Pandora's Box
A juxtaposition to the negative sentiments released from the box of mythological fame, PIE’s debut EP Pandora’s Box unveils an enticing selection of songs that radiate poignancy and musicality.
Brazilian-born artist PIE flawlessly merges the old and the new, drawing upon her Latin roots to combine Brazilian groove with UK Jazz to establish her unique sound. Unlike the box of mythological fame, this album releases only unadulterated dopamine within the listener. PIE has effortlessly maintained her recognisable style, whilst giving each track a defining sound of its own.
The opening track No Men is built around a groovy piano melody that seamlessly blends with a lowkey drum beat to create a track that is not only easy on the ear, but also soothing to the soul.
PIE’s vocals are reminiscent of the blues soul stresses of the 50’s - such as Nina Simone - and second track Temptation could have been plucked from the milieu of the mid-century jazz scene. Further solidifying this comparison, PIE’s signature saxophone solos - which has thus far defined and amplified her discography - are present and elevating the blues-y nature of the track.
If you’ve ever deemed yourself to be a hopeless romantic, PIE’s latest track Pandora’s Box is the perfect backing track for your next wistful reverie. Personifying toxic affections with the titular box, the song takes you through a journey to releasing and escaping this toxicity to embrace the song’s final message: “Have a little bit of hope”. The EP’s final track - and PIE’s self-proclaimed favourite single - adopts upbeat guitar riffs and intimate dialogue to leave the listener craving for more.
A radiant talent in the UK Jazz scene, PIE is not an artist to be overlooked. Her authentic lyrics, vibeworthy beats and trademark saxophone coalesce to proffer the next big name in the world of contemporary jazz.
