Butler

Myquale enlists the support of Maceo and Aaliyah Allah for his old-skool new record, ‘Butler’. There’s an infectious beat to this one, one of those where funk meets relaxation and production meets an ideal balance of vocal styles – especially from the Chicago artist himself. It goes without saying that this track has many nostalgic elements, however it’s not a track that delivers this to you unless you unpick it, which means it’s packed tight and done cleverly.

For those who don’t know, Myquale is an artist who grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, raised in Queens, New York – a place with a star-studded history in hip-hop. With this now nestled in your knowledge bank, you will now start to hear the influence of a 2000’s New York intro, found on a 50 Cent record, added to the vocal stylistic essence of acid rap, similar to Chicago’s Chance the Rapper (please excuse the comparison, but it was one that I felt was necessary). It’s certainly a concoction of sounds and with the soft, soothing, vocals Maceo and Aaliyah Allah provide, you realise how instrumental to this track, in all senses of the word, all of them are.
