BOP
Toronto producer Eva Shaw enlists the assistance of rappers Kris The $pirit and DillanPonders on the raw, hard-hitting ‘BOP’. Accompanied by a homemade, self-directed video by the 3 Canadian artists, this part punk, part hip hop ball of energy is both colourful and intense, with impressive production work and two full-bodied, no nonsense performances.
The instrumental produced by Eva Shaw, who has done remixes for Rihanna and Fifth Harmony, is cannibalistic. The off-key, odd groove of the sample is atmospheric and intruding, while the power hungry, ginormous bass devours all in its path. The production is crunchy and harsh, attacking the listener’s senses. Both rappers deal with the sheer strength of the beat well; Kris The $pirit delivers a skilful variety of flows and punchlines, while DillanPonders tonality fits the beat well and matches Kris’ flavourful, tongue in cheek lyricism.
With a well edited and visually stimulating video, this is a strongly produced, well directed and smartly delivered track.
