Wake Up
Rising UK rapper Kwoli Black is supported by Lex Amor on his introspective new track Wake Up as he faces his mental struggles on a microphone.
Inspired by poetry from young, Kwoli’s rap approach is a little slower and down-tempo than perhaps is expected but what it lacks in head-bouncing it makes up with the thoughts it provokes. Fans will be familiar with the delicately spoken insights showcased on his EP which dropped at the end of last year- it is fair to say ‘Wake Up’ continues this.
I guess then the perfect appointment for this track was fellow introspect-emcee Lex Amor, whom Kwoli shares a city and a mic with in this case. Both lay their cards down on the table in a way that welcomes and celebrates vulnerability; speaking on the single Kwoli states: ‘Vulnerability is a superpower’.
The string-laden production comes courtesy of long-time collaborator and close friend JSTRINGS who stays true to his name and keeps the chords looping and drums kicking.
Far from a one trick pony, the release prior to this ‘Plugged Up’ sees a wholly different side to our artists’ sound, where he puts his reservations to one side for a more energetic take on life.
Wake Up though is one for them slow mornings where it all doesn’t really seem worth it, but you have to remind yourself it is and feeling that way is only natural.
