Vest & Boxers
Lava La Rue has released the queer anthem of 2022 so far Vest & Boxers accompanied by one trip of a music video directed by Bedroom Projects. This is their first single of the year following up from For you and Magpie which featured Congo natty, Phoebs on the Nia Archives jungle remix last year.
An energetic punky song that spirals through all the feelings and questions that many woman loving woman/non-binary/conforming people can relate to on first dates and new romances ‘Like ooh, does she like me? Could be my wifey’. ‘Vest & Boxers’ references the ‘dyke uniform’ says the West London artist, musician and founder of NiNE8 Collective, the creative crew consisting of themselves, Biig Piig, Bone Slim, Libaan, Lorenzosv, Mac Wetha, Nayana IZ and Nige.
The visuals and musicality go hand in hand; an animated and surreal feel is generated by the scooby doo cartoon like adlibs in the background, as well as the red lighting and quick cuts to fuzzy shots between the characters giving it that nightmarish flashback aesthetic. Lava’s trance-like melodies smoothly flow from one verse to the next, carried by the eerie guitar riff, immersing us fully into this wacky ensemble.
They touch all bases, artistically expressing their identity within the LGBTQ+ community and fusing together their mixed heritage within their unique sound, opening a space that you can jam and mosh to in your own Vest & Boxers.
