Track of the Week: dj
Amongst the most sui generis voices in the alternative UK scene, South-East London’s Jim Legxacy’s new effort dj flirts with devastation; a masterclass in ambience and emotion.
The rise of Legxacy has been an inspiring and compelling watch. Stylistically elusive and creatively avant-garde, Legxacy’s material is challenging and surprising, twisting and turning musically and tonally; the kind of artist that, even if you are a regular listener, you don’t know what to expect from the next track. Last year’s debut album CITADEL was an encompassing journey into the inner workings of a raw artist and tainted soul, and provoked a refreshing amount of critical and public acclaim. This year has seen Legxacy unveil a scattering of diverse singles, each one dragging you further into his curious existence, not least this newest offering.
The genius of dj lies in its subtly. The melodically cascading guitar line is like something from an American Football track, whilst Legxacy’s softly crumbling vocals pierce, almost haunting in their desperation and grit. An inspired Unknown T sample is the cue for glitchy percussion and erratic bass to spellbind the canvas, their choppy brushstrokes adding pace and purpose to the track. This is a fine piece from Legxacy, a songwriter who continues to push boundaries and defy convention.
