Track of the Week: Dani Song
Multi-faceted maverick Mac Wetha continues his metamorphosis into DIY rockstar with his latest rager Dani Song.
Adroitly accomplished in everything that he touches, the NiNE8 stalwart made his name as the pinnacle producer for one of the most interesting collectives in the UK. ’21 saw Mac begin the shift from behind the buttons to in front of the mic, with his anthemic EP Make It Thru an invigorating concoction of classic indie sounds combined with a crisper, modernised production ethos.
Returning with his first offering of 2022, Mac picks up from where he left off on Make It Thru. Subtle harmony, layered instrumentation and pacey percussion build a sonic foundation for Mac’s stirring performance and pensive lyricism. Mac’s nuance for catchy chorus’ was illustrated on his EP standout REM, and is further highlighted here, with Mac delivering a frenzied and teasingly short hook. The accompanying video was premiered by Fader and takes influenced from indie videos like Blur’s Song 2 but with the classic NiNE8 aesthetic.
Although I’m keen not to lose the production output of Wetha - and am hopeful for some fresh NiNE8 fire before long - it’s incredibly refreshing to see Mac challenge his artistry and find new ways to sonically express himself.
