Track of the Week: Browns
In a scene plagued by taking itself too seriously, the return of South East London grandad’s Pete & Bas is much welcomed, with the pair progressing in skill and style on the rip roaring cut Browns.
The duo have transformed themselves from jokey meme territory to highly respected spitters through a series of refined and entertaining tracks. Pulling up to many of the most established freestyle platforms like Plugged in with Fumez the Engineer and The Generals Corner with Kenny Allstar, the duo released their debut mixtape last year, Quick Little Mixtape. A period of silence followed, which turned out to be due to Bas being inside; now fresh home, the pair have come to restate their claim on the scene.
This track is one of the clearest showcases yet of Pete & Bas’ appeal. Over an ear-worm if slightly ominous synth and snappy drums, the pair go back-to-back, unleashing inventive bars that border on hilarity. Flaunting crystal clear diction, gruff tones and a gamut of savvy flows, it sounds like these geezers have been doing it all their lives. Long may they continue!
