Sense
‘Sense’, the debut single from artist/producer THIETA, is a deliciously murky and provocative affair with an accompanying hypnotic, ambitious visual. The bedroom producer who rose to Soundcloud cult status, with collaborations with the likes of IAMDDB and Sam Wise in his repertoire, has been shaping his own musical sound and direction. For a debut track, this makes quite the impression.
Pitched somewhere between alternative R&B and post-punk modernism, the heavy, distorted bass riff immediately stands out, subtle but fierce. There are some psychedelic guitar melodies, that are showered in chorus, and synths that are placed nicely in the mix to bring out a lo-fi hip hop element in the track. THEITA’s voice is fun of personality, and technically very strong, with the reverb laden production embracing new wave bedroom pop. The chorus is courageous melodically, opting against playing it safe, whilst remaining affecting and catchy. Lyrically, there is a sense of mystery mixed in with the themes of hedonism and romanticism, keeping the track interesting and compelling.
Strong production, excellent vocally and with an artistic, individualistic video to match, this is an impressive debut.
