Feels Like
An artist incredibly slept on, Downtown Kayoto hits all the right notes, physically and metaphorically, on new single ‘Feels Like’. The genre merging singer and rapper, based in Hull, takes influence from a wide range of sounds, portrays a strong sense of identity in this emotive and celestial track, pitched somewhere between Daniel Caesar and Kevin Abstract.
The bittersweet sounding keys and brisk, forward-thinking drum kit act as an excellent platform for Downtown to explore themes such as reality, race and expressionism. There are strong bars about character and existence, and also frustration at the state of affairs that we live in. The hook line ‘tell me what it feels like’ has particularly strong annotations of perception and reflection. When singing, the artist shows off an extensive vocal range, with layered and textured harmonies offering a sweet and cordial blanket in top of the track.
This is a really interesting, compelling track. The writing is full of integrity and personality, and Downton Kayoto proves himself to be a diverse talent, who is a highly effective lyricist, with an eye for both social commentary and expression of self. One to watch.
