Mac Wetha illustrates his artistry with raw and uncompromising rager ‘REM’. 

A key member of creative collective Nine8, Mac Wetha has become known and acclaimed for his versatile and kaleidoscopic production, recently lending his expertise to American frontrunner Anime for his album opener ‘Burden’. The chief sonic architect from the Nine8 crew has been instrumental in the groups rise and the success of artists such as Biig Piig and Lava La Rue. 

Despite the fact he is generally heralded as a beat maker, Mac shows the true extent of his talent and music nuance on this new cut, offering up a punky, Bloc Party inspired alt rock banger. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Mac strike out as a solo artist after he released the subtle ‘Blur’ and heart wrenching ‘Culver’ last year, but this new single is arguably the most impactful so far. 

With the backdrop of clatteringly urgent drums, subdued guitar and robust bass, Mac rasps into the mic with tender desperation, stating “I’ve been having the weirdest dreams / I feel like there’s no escape”. The bold, unsettling lyrical ideas, though minimalist, are powerful and poignant, emitting a strong noughties indie influence. 

Yes, this is an impressive song in its own right, but the fact that it’s delivered by a hip hop producer is mind-blowing. A truly eclectic talent, we need to cherish the ingenuity of Mac Wetha.
