Red Light Green Light
Digga D is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, names in drill right now, and he is truly making the most of his time in the spotlight, with another rip-roaringly vehement and ghastly entertaining number ‘Red Light Green Light’.
An artist never known to shy away from the public eye (nor the romanticism of gang violence), it’s the raw vividness of Digga’s lyricism and the charismatic menace of his delivery that sets him apart from the overly condensed and frustratingly monotonous modern drill scene. The West London rapper’s 2021 album ‘Made In The Pyrex’ was a mixed bag; messy and malevolent, yet magnetising, there is something gripping about Digga’s coming-of-age tales of miscreancy.
The singles that have superseded the release of MITP have been of a similar ilk, with the ArrDee featuring ‘Wasted’ highlighting some stylistic variation, and the apathetic ‘2k17’ an embodiment of Digga’s no-fucks attitude and menacing persona. ‘Red Light Green Light’ lends into the current Squid Game craze, illustrating Digga’s marketing savviness and visual creativity through the self directed video. The track itself offers a winning formula within the current UK rap climate, with its booming 808s, ominous cadences and cinematically violent lyrical content.
I’ve always thought there is something quite gothic and theatrical about drill, and Digga plays the anti-hero, the Faustian flawed protagonist, like no other driller. I’m sure there will be plenty of twists and turns in his burgeoning career, but one thing is clear - Digga D is a polarising figure who possesses bundles of potential.
