Piece of Shit/Sur Jupiter
North-Londoner Osquello’s latest release ‘Piece of Shit/Sur Jupiter’ brings an honest and much-needed sentiment to the world of hip-hop. Short but sweet, the two-track EP shows the rapper, singer and producer for who he is. What sets Osquello apart from the rest is that he is strikingly vulnerable yet unapologetic. Singing and rapping over sultry synthesised chords on ‘Piece of Shit’, he introspectively explains his understanding of his own emotions as well as his love for his own appearance. His flows in the second verse excellently build to the climax of the song, repeatedly pleading for those he has no time for to ‘please just shut the fuck up’ before the drums, bass, chords and hook all culminate brilliantly for the song’s conclusion.
The second track ‘Sur Jupiter’ features more superb bars and flows, but the production is what captured my attention. Using a repetitive and evolving female vocal to build the foundation of the beat, the steady flow of Osquello’s voice and drums is complimented by synthesised one-shots, tremolo vocals and panned percussion. It sounds both familiar and experimental, showcasing the many talents and unique sound of the up-and-comer.
Many artists dislike being compared to their peers as it takes away from their own merit, but it is difficult to liken Osquello to many other artists regardless. He has found a distinctive tone in his music and with collaborations with artists such as Clairo and Decklan McKenna already under his belt, the future looks bright for the exceptional twenty-year-old.
