Lockdown At Lenny's
After toying with our emotions ever since the sneak peak of his ‘Saturday Interlude’ surfaced, Len finally gives the people a taste of summer in a two-piece release ‘Lockdown At Lenny’s’.
Surfacing from South of the river, Len’s the spirited sound that’s been circulating a buzz throughout the UK scene for some time now with his; intoxicating hooks, bold wordplay and ostentatious flows exhibited in bangers such as ’Kylie Minogue’ and ‘Deceptikon’ from his Days Before Interstellar album. Gravitating towards more experimental efforts with every release, Len only continues to push the boat out as he expands his charming soundscape which seems to be more prevalent than ever in this fresh offering.
Ever since I heard the snippet of that infectious ‘if the feds tryna lock you up, imma tell em these are my drugs, baby these are my drugs’ hook, it’s safe to say I was about as gassed as the brudda in the black t-shirt hearing it for the first time on the leak. Following a chain of passive aggressive ‘drop that asap!’ in the comments, Len finally gave the people what they demanded just as the current heat wave rolled out through the UK - coincidence?
Going into the two sided offering, I jumped straight to ‘Saturday Interlude’ since the snippet had been lingering in my head top for some time now, just waiting to take in the whole number and I can’t lie, the man doesn’t miss. Eased into a progression of ascending synth leads, followed by a woozy bass, Len warms up with a chain of short-lived harmonies before breaking off into that choppy hook we’ve all been reciting since the preview. That switch up from the sweet sounding ‘see you on a Sa-tur-dayyy’ flow to the string of ‘twist and roll it, kiss and stroke it, twist and turn it, lips my neck and earn it’ should actually be illegal, it should not be allowed - that is all I have to say.
Considering Len had only leaked ‘Saturday Interlude’ out of the two, I just assumed it was the front runner for this release - I was very wrong. When I heard JennyOnTheBlocc… whewww. Sonically this number is unmatched. Initially swaying through a sequence of strummed synths with VHS crackling within the ether and muffled bass succeeding, SpicyOnTheTrack (I think that’s the tag anyways) leads us into a potentially whimsical underground production until punching in a medley of panning afro beat percussion, giving off some soothing Cruel Santino vibes.
Len’s selection of production wholly compliments that silky-smooth hook he lays, flawlessly weaving through the rosy instrumental as he breaks off into his encounter giving Jenny from overseas a tour of the block. Following the intoxicating hook, a few other things stand out such as the word play strung together: ‘I’m so sick of love songs like Neo/Lets bang it like Cilit’ - has me oddly reminiscing the days of prime era R&B and that loud don on those cleaning adverts back in the day all at once. Personally, Len’s ability to captivate us with those hooks and short bridges of his were what really wrapped me up within this song though, that ‘I need your love… I need your love’ line just hits different.
Refusing to be boxed in, Len only continues to pave the way with his free-spirited sound that’s landed him yet another solid set of anthems - the Stockwell talent’s price only seems to be going up from here. But don’t just take my word for it, go take in ‘Lockdown At Lenny’s’ for yourself!
