Knuckles

Lyrically profound and sonically condensed, North West Londoner Sophomooreik delves deep into ambition, fear and self-esteem on the compelling, luxurious and eerie ‘Knuckles’. Taken from his new 7 pronged EP ‘EASYAS’, meaning self-indulgence, the artist affirms his ability to tell a perceptive and affecting tale. Using his own experiences and imagination, he constructs a semi-fictional / semi-autobiographical narrative. Connecting elements of trap, electronica and alternative, Sophomooreik has developed a singular voice of emotional maturity, spitting salient flows and au courant, enthralling writing.

The instrumental revolves around distorted textures and ambience, using synth and piano sounds, as well as an echo bell melody to create a murky and unsettling timbre. The bass is aggressive and lucrative and the electronic drum kit is rigidly hard-hitting in its adamance and purpose. The alchemistic, sinister soundscape is ideal for Sophomooreik to exact himself with dark, vivid and often satirical bars. His delivery is precise and expressive, and the verses are narratively progressive. The hook is creative and memorable and, unlike much of UK rap at the moment, doesn’t have an over-reliance on autotune production, which is invigorating, allowing the artist to show more personality and emotion in his delivery.

Refreshingly honest and raw, this is an excellent song taken from a very decent EP. I expect Sophomooreik to continue to improve and hone his sound, ready for a big 2021.
