I Need A Light
After tapping into that inner ‘addict mode’ to express himself on his explosive, head-banging single ‘Like You Know’ – AP’s only ‘done did it again’. Returning with that renowned meditative flow of his on the lulling new release ‘I Need A Light’.
Partnering up with fellow heavy lidded lyricist from across the pond Smoke DZA, the two coast atop a jazzy instrumental shrouded in a thick layer of haze produced by The Purist. Brassy synths resonate throughout the track, while clashes of kicks echo alongside thumping boom-bap bass - all of which shortly dissipates into an ascending series of keys as Apex expresses his need of a light to spark. AP takes a few puffs from the beat before passing the bat onto Smoke, setting the track a blaze. That East Coast twang DZA possess brings a gritty edge to the track with his sedative, yet calculated delivery. I mean, he says it for himself. ‘Calm with the flow, smooth / we kill em’.
This intoxicating track gives us a scant sneak-peak into Apex’s potential direction for his highly anticipated ‘SSV3’ tape. If this didn’t show enough promise for this luxurious 14 track project on the way – then I’m sure features from his fellow Elevation Meditation members such as Finn Foxell and Louis Couture will establish that narrative. Oh, and of course the tape is set to release in AP fashion on 4/20.
The Sensei once again makes it crystal clear why he’s rightfully placed within the upper-echelon of rappers currently emerging from the capital. Sitting comfortably in his seat at the round table amongst fellow pioneers across the land. Undoubtedly living up to his title as ‘Lord’ Apex.
