I Love You, I Hate You
UK creative extraordinaire Simbiatu Ajikawo, a.k.a. Little Simz, returns with a cyclical dichotomy of vulnerable self-expression.
Simz has consistently exhibited unadulterated talent within the UK rap scene, producing multiple ground-breaking albums including ‘Stillness In Wonderland’ and ‘GREY Area’. Her meticulous flows and whimsical wordplay set a precedent for true artistry today in every sense of the word. This new track ‘I Love You, I Hate You’ delivers once more. A glorious cacophony of orchestral instruments introduces the track, creating a monumental atmosphere that is quickly juxtaposed by a funky bass line and catchy vocal sample that reoccurs throughout the track.
This contrast between moods is a clear nod to the parallels of emotion that both the title and lyrics portray. The track is directed to her father figure, and she expresses a clear conflict in terms of her feelings towards him. His absence and disconnect enrages Simz; her will to stay strong amidst the “heartbreak” prevents her from saying “I miss you”. Simz has used this pain to focus on self-growth as she’s “forgivin’ for me” and this track is testament to her individual power.
You can pre-order the upcoming album, which comes out on 3rd September, here.
