Give A Little

Ego Ella May is truly a master of the intuitive reveal. It feels like her songs are always patiently poised, determined to be released only when they will have the most positive impact on society. Latest single ‘Give A Little’ sways and pleads for peace through a resigned melancholy. The guitar chords warble like stretched tape and maintain a unique quality through not being drenched in reverb - a prevailing trend of over-familiarity that can sometimes sedate the ear. I can only assume this is the work of rising left-field producer Melo Zed, who showcased this understanding of unobtrusive guitar earlier in the year on Lex Amor’s ‘Mazza’.

Give A Little’s subject matter is of course effortlessly relatable, this is Ego Ella May. We wake up vexed, ready to take to our computers in search of a sparring partner in order to feel validated in a world of injustice and seemingly unconquerable capitalism. In retaliation to this horror shit show, Ego Ella May’s concise yet lethargic vocal never says more than is necessary and is so fluent in the soul’s dialect, that she appeals to everybody’s core humanity. The harmonies delve into several registers underpinning the nude guitar, pre-empting a gentle climax of stylistically flawless Trumpet work from Theo Croker.
