Fool
In his latest release, Dominic Wolf has managed to create a musical escapade with a variety of sounds that compliment each other like an unexpected ice cream flavor. The project is an EP titled ‘Fool’ which is composed of three individual tracks that showcase the diversity that Wolf is capable of.
The first number is the namesake of the project, ‘Fool’. In an audibly satisfying presentation of syllables and slow starts, Wolf delivers an unexpected swell and crash of emotion that cascades over the listener as the chorus comes into full swing. The jazzy nature of the vocals combined with what sounds like a collection of analogue instruments and digital embellishments not only surprise and delight, they also showcase the complex ear that Wolf has for composition. It’s the manipulation of instrumental ups and downs that draw the listener in even deeper.
The second number could almost be mistaken for a separate artist featuring on the project if it wasn’t for the signature style that Wolf touts from track to track. ‘Junebug’ collects Wolf’s production style and serves it up by leveraging a molasses-like delivery that adds emphasis to the meaning behind the words.
With a continued expression of self, a compilation of cohesive rhythmic choices and the climax of the sentiment behind the masterpiece - Wolf presents ‘Where You Are’, the third and final song featured in the project.
What’s fascinating about Wolf as an artist is his ability to make each individual tune sound like a stand alone body of work while maintaining the common thread between each song through his stylistic and production choices. Sonically each song has the same fingerprints but drastically different blueprints. In an exploration of the experience of growing up, we see Wolf begin to define himself as a young adult and as an artist. The complexities of his human nature echo in each note and the subject matter.
