Ego Sun Fire Rising
East London singer-songwriter Baby Pink ponders pride and its stake in love on the musing, articulate and absorbing EP ‘Ego Sun Fire Rising’. A concise and explorative writer, Baby Pink merges generic convention with ease, creating ethereal R&B music influenced by Hip Hop, Electronica and Soul. On the vivacious and charismatic project, Baby Pink tells tales of late-night kitchen floor love and a burdening sense of self over atmospheric, melodically intrusive instrumentals. Despite its relatively short run time, Pink’s thematic sharpness allows for a progressive narrative and emotive imagery.
The project begins as it means to go on with ‘Heartless’, a subtle, moody R&B number that sees Baby Pink wandering the beat, wondering the toll of a relationship of her psyche. There is a great attitude in the vocal delivery, and the sparse, progressive instrumental highlights the melodic skill of the artist. The second track on the EP, ‘No Cheques’ is a ballad for the social media age, with distorted guitars and busy percussion complemented by an adventurous bass part. This is followed by a pop banger, ‘Fortified’ that continues the laidback timbre and atmospheric approach, with sensual and hearty lyricism and imagery.
On Ego, the lead single from the tape, Baby Pink flirts with a melancholic vitality that the listener cannot help but be hooked by. The track is empowering and meditative, as the singer impresses melodically with a gorgeous performance. On the final offering of the project, Reckless, we find Baby Pink at a sense of solemn contentment in herself and her surroundings, asking the subject of the story for their love and undivided attention through a series of coy and thoughtful statements.
This is an affecting and impressive project that keeps the listener guessing sonically and lyrically. Full of invention and meandering texture, this is a promising showcase of the talent of Baby Pink.
