Downtown Kayoto: Live in Leeds
Recently, we finally got the opportunity to see rising talent Downtown Kayoto in the flesh. The R&B singer/rapper headlined respected venue Headrow House to a small crowd of ecstatic fans.
Whilst mistakenly catching an Uber to Belgrave, we quickly rushed over to the other venue, and headed in for an evening of astounding music. We were greeted upstairs by Kayoto himself, who was genuinely so appreciative to talk to fans and hear feedback in person.
I had interviewed Downtown late last year, and whilst interviewing him suggested how he should come to Leeds to play a venue as revered as Headrow House - and coincidentally, here he was, appearing just as excited for the opening act as the fans were to see him.
The stage was lit purple and red, setting the ambience for the warm yet energetic soundscapes of his music. There was no room for filler, his short but sweet setlist was full of fan favourites. Whilst Feels Like was sorely missed (despite probably asking him to play it too much), it was made up for with a slew of should-be hits like the drum and bass influenced Hello World and the indie-tinged Karma Called.
It must’ve felt good for the Hull songwriter to play for an audience belting every word. The crowd were loving every second of the intimate performance, where he repeatedly conversed with them about what songs to perform. Of course, he played many from his new EP NAVIG8, which since release, has seen a great reception from fans. Kayoto didn’t slip up or let the pressure get to him once; he glided through his set like a star in the making.
If he’s not on your radar already, make sure he is now. Check out his music below!
