Paris Texas, the mysterious new Compton duo, drop their new self-produced EP ‘BOY ANONYMOUS’, with its catchy fusions of indie and alternative hip hop making them one of the most exciting acts in music right now.

Over the past few months, members Louie Pastel and Felix have been rolling out this project with one incredible single after another. The rap-rock anthem ‘HEAVY METAL’, the atmospheric, spacy ‘SITUATIONS, and the indie infused ‘FORCE OF HABIT’, which is perhaps the best of the bunch with its youthful beat and insanely catchy hook (‘Walk around like I’m the shit, I think it’s a force of habit’ will be stuck in your head for days).

The South-Central emcees have only given us five new songs, and whilst the singles may be the strongest tracks, the new ones show just as much versatility. The EP clocks in at just under 22 minutes and doesn’t give us enough time to really get to know the new duo, but it definitely leaves us hungry for more.

For better or worse, they seem to wear their influences on their sleeve. Being from Compton, they don’t share soundscapes with who you would expect. The opener ‘CASINO’ has a Pi’erre Bourne, cloud rap style beat, before transitioning chaotically into a lacklustre Odd Future-esque track ‘PACK 4 DA LOW’. Occasionally the rappers’ deliveries and flows are reminiscent of a Baby Keem or an early A$AP Rocky, whilst the instrumentals have more in common with Jean Dawson and Kevin Abstract’s emo-tinged style. Many people will be drawn to them through comparisons of internet phenomenas like BROCKHAMPTON, JPEGMAFIA or Injury Reserve, but they do manage to stand out in their own creative way, despite occasional shortcomings in the track list.

Their lyrics are witty, playful, and clever. With quotable lines like ‘got these tabs on my tongue like a browser’, they float over their thumping, energetic production with ease. Whilst the EP seems to lack one clear vision, constantly going between high octane adrenaline and casual, dreamy melodies, they still certainly leave an impression in a short amount of time.

Just a few months ago, no one seemed to know who Paris Texas were, but with this new release they are sure to end up on alternative music fans radar. The experimental duo will no doubt be polarising with their brash style, but they have already built up an extreme amount of hype, thanks to their infectious genre fusions. While it is a solid introduction, it’s occasionally rough around the edges and there is room for improvement, but regardless, it seems like Paris Texas have an exciting future ahead of them.
