Back in Uni
Rising Nigerian artist Blaqbonez works in collaboration with JAE5 for his new single Back in Uni. Produced by the UK heavyweight, the laid-back beat is made up of a rhythmic percussion instrument and subtle synths.
The catchy beat is the perfect backdrop for Blaqbonez and recaptures the easygoing nature of earlier experiences at university. Signed to Chocolate City Music, the lead single off of his forthcoming album Young Preacher, Back in Uni is the perfect window into a passage of time in the life of Blaqbonez as he muses on a more carefree time
The song is about Blaqbonez’s unfaithfulness towards his partner whilst acknowledging his own reckless behaviour at the time as he played the field however the singer fails to show remorse as he sings melodically “ To all the keles wey I don ghost, didn't mean to play with your heart but that is how the game goes.”
His last project Sex Over Love leaned heavily into his Afrobeat and trap influence, but if this single is anything to go by we might hear Blaqbonez’s more smooth R&B and sensitive gospel influences in the new project.
Showcasing his artistic creativity further, Blaqbonez co-directed alongside Perliks to create a vibrant and colourful visual that pays homage to today’s Afrobeat stars and culture by enacting their cover art. This included Wizkid's ‘bad to me’, Oxlade's ‘ku lo sa’, Buju's ‘Kenkele’ and Ayra Star's ‘rush’ to name a few.
