Act A Fool
Coming out the gates strong with his debut single of the year, BZ blesses us with ‘Act a Fool’. 2020 may not have been the ideal year and was a “phat L” as many would conclude, but for BZ that didn’t seem to be the case – he was clearly too busy in his bag trying to perfect his sound. This fact is visibly verified by the likes of ‘Big Oga’ (currently sitting at around 40k streams on Spotify alone) and final single of 2020 ‘No Lay Lay’. Yet, this recent release has made it clear that this year he’s coming for everyones neck and has no interest in playing games – stating that there is “no competition” out there for him and that “it’s (his) tournament”.
BZ has undoubtedly set the bench mark high for his peers here, as his undeniably assertive approach on this gritty track draws you in with ease. He comes with an imposing energy, seemingly commanding the donor of influence for the project – instructing them;
Coasting a top of a villainous instrumental containing hints of an afro-centric essence with profound kicks and dark strung out synths, BZ consolidates with a hypnotic hook; its thick cadence giving that “pay me money, pound or dollar - or bad man will come for you” punch line all the more power. This masterpiece of a beat is the result of BZ ‘s trustworthy producer Eyes. BZ and Eyes have created numerous bangers over their time in the game, forming a chemistry that hasn’t gone unnoticed by their fans; their dynamic pairing somewhat reminiscent of J Hus and Jae 5.
The video, courtesy of Tyrus, consists of black and white framing throughout, giving the instrumental an even more ominous feel. The visuals switch from cinematic close ups of BZ’s eyes in the opening and closing shots to more nonchalant scenes of him coolly chilling in a frost white Porsche, sporting a private registration plate in respect of the track, spelling out ‘Act a Fool’. Although the custom plate may have been a talking point within the video, it was the homage paid to Tupac that got the people typing in the comments section. BZ is seen replicating Tupac’s “All Eyez On Me” album cover; interlocking his fingers and throwing up the “W”, rocking that black vest and draped in some heavy metal – all while he confesses that he feels “like Tupac the way her eyes (are) on me”. Now if that doesn’t validate his self-acclaimed “coldest and it’s undisputed” bar, then I don’t know what will.
BZ’s soundscape seems to be constantly evolving with each release and it doesn’t appear to be showing signs of back peddling soon. Hence why I’m so excited to see how this year plays out for the rising talent. Once all these restrictions are eased, the sky is the limit for this man. Hop on the wave now before you miss out.
