Won't Work
Returning with her second single of the year, ‘Won’t Work’ brings female-empowerment to the forefront with IYAMAH explaining ‘I can’t be your princess, I can’t be your queen’. The track takes a laid-back approach within its production moving between neo-soul with Hip-Hop induced percussion, perfectly complimenting the scattered horns throughout.
Following her first release this year, a downtempo, upright-bass aided cover of Alicia Keys’, ‘A Woman’s Worth’, IYAMAH continues to explore her sound with this feel-good track. After playing the single live at all of her headline shows prior to it’s release, it had been in the making for over a year before bit by bit becoming its final form.
With El Train on it’s atmospheric, Hip-Hop instrumental alongside trumpet from Poppy Daniels creating a nostalgic feel, ‘Won’t Work’ perfectly places IYAMAH’s gritty, yet delicate vocals over a fusion of her wide-ranging influences, creating something refreshing within itself.
