Starting off the new decade with a refreshing approach to blurring the line between his favourite genres, Contour creates something new, out of familiar sounds. The Charleston based multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer is always pushing his own boundaries and creating distinctive amalgamations of styles spanning from Hip-Hop and Electronica to lo-fi and Psych Rock. Having released a variety of projects, all honing their singular sound, ‘Weight’ comes as yet another display of the East-Coast musicians’ ability to keep it different.

The opening track ‘Lies’ brings a low-key, laid back feel with distorted vocals and Jazz-influenced percussion, allowing the South Carolina artist to glide across the instrumental with his singular vocals and off-kilter, songwriting tendencies. Moving into the second track ‘Distance’, Contour already maintains his ability to switch up sounds within perfect cohesion. The contrast of the elegant keys combined with it’s loose, nonchalant-drums, creates an eerie-space for the artist to lay out his honest and raw lyricism aided by his distinctive flow.

Continuing with his unconventional sound, ‘Good Call’ brings out emotionally-induced verses painted over the distorted percussion and a free-flowing bass line, creating this lo-fi penultimate track. Moving into the fourth and final track of the short, yet expansive EP, ‘Rainman Freestyle’ brings a delicate touch. Again fusing gentle keys with his emotive-flow and heartfelt lyricism, this final track draws to a close the unique sound constructed within this four-track project. Rounding out with a light, keys driven transition, lifting the mood of this transcendent EP.

With a string of singles already released, producer credits for other intriguing, upcoming talent and three projects of his own, Contour is just at the beginning of crafting a colourful and detailed world of his own in which to be immersed by his unaffected approach to genre boundaries and expectations.
