Wait Up For Me
Callum, 24, musically known as is BermudaCal, is an eclectic artist of many talents, whose very stage name is attributed to a dynamic geographic identity and is a new emerging artist guaranteed to be a new favourite on your playlists! An independent artist with Bermuda origin and who nowadays splits his time between his hometown and London, BermuduCal has blazed a unique path of blending sounds – credited to his background in being able to play the Saxophone – between Jazz, Hip Hop, House and UK Garage. In return, he brings an exciting fusion of ingredients that detail very immersive stories within the music, of which he largely self-produces as well as writes and performs, making him a triple threat of boundless talent!
In his latest musical venture, the single ‘Wait Up For me’, BermudaCal aims for a Neo-Soul vibe with a welcoming Jazz instrumentation. Within the track, he implores “Can you wait up for me” in the chorus, whilst painting an impression of what could be the challenges of trying to maintain a long-distance relationship. He tells his girl that “It’s spring, and imma have you bouncing like the season” but if she can just hold on, he’ll truly make it worth her while – ‘have you sitting in the clouds/ Floating through the Sea” – showing her all life and its wondrous experiences have to offer. However, Cal cautiously warns early on, that if “you cut like my feelings, then I’ll put them on a plate” reflecting the brutal honesty that relationships or the lack thereof, are oftentimes unavoidable collateral towards a musician’s artistry. Interestingly, midway through the song, we are introduced to a female voice, who calmly says “Breathe” and this happens to reverberate throughout the remainder of the song. I think this inclusion creatively enriches the song’s narrative and could be inferred as an insight of the woman’s point of view, who is perhaps trying to provide the reassurance that she will stick around and wait up for him.
BermudaCal is clearly a multitalented artist and for new listeners who enjoy their hip-hop, may remind them of a Mac Miller influence, however there’s enough versatility here in his music catalogue thus far that brandishes him as a one of a kind artist whose unpredictability will surely take the listener to exciting, new heights, both technically through the sound and thematically through the experiences.
