Tongues

Speaking on ‘Tongues’, his newest release, London’s Monro says he’s ‘proud because it’s a really expressive record you can’t compare it to anything else... it has so many influences’.

It’s true, the track twists and turns, serpent-like through genre, we hear samples of tabla blended with hip hop, New York disco, house, driving beats and sounds that sometimes evoke The Prodigy, other times Kendrick Lamar.

To try and dissect each influence, we feel would be to slightly miss the point. North Carolina’s Jalen Santoy sets the right example, he rides the instrumental like a horse half wild, always confident and in control but sometimes letting it run free to its full potential. As a listener, you just have to hold on tight.

‘Tongues’ is the first single from Monro’s upcoming EP which aims to ‘cross-pollinate’ artists based in the UK and US. The track keeps the pace already set by Monro’s solo work and production for the likes of Rico Nasty - innovative, disruptive, thrilling.
