The Blacker The Berry
Nicki Knightz presents new confidence in visual-only release ‘Blacker The Berry’. Juxtaposed against the uncut glass of 2018’s ‘Hate EP’ it leans heavily into the red suede chairs of Hackney’s low lit African restaurants. Nicki’s father played by Alessandro Babalola (Top Boy’s Haze) holds court whilst Nicki breaks the 4th wall blow for blow. As usual, she is more than effortless, there aren’t the words to underpin such a brilliant poet.
She honours the inheritance of her father’s work ethic accordingly with this stunning 3 part visual short. From the bottle to the beads, to Nicki in bright green against the stark white walls of a Hackney grocers, every visual element has a purpose.
The sunburnt vibrato of the sample that Henny Knightz has metamorphosed and the additional drums are an assault of genius and the song thuds deeply in the chest, whilst still chilling the blood.
Demands for authenticity and originality are stacked high on your plate here, and the impending EP is sure to propel Nicki & Henny Knightz ever closer to their rightful place amongst East London’s most forward-thinking exports.
