Smarties
Yves Jones (one half of up-and-coming duo Fieves) has linked up with Manny based emcee DBL A for one of the finest UK garage/rap crossovers of the year, Smarties. Putting Ladbroke Grove to shame, this should be every pre drinks anthem for the rest of the year.
The chemistry brings fireworks, to be expected, considering DBL A has stated in the past “from an early age I'd been brought up on Garage like So Solid Crew”.
The production soars with its 2000s flavour, and is complimented flawlessly by DBL A, with lines like “you hit that spliff and it send ya, better know I’ll end ya, best MC contenda’”, and “cause it come’s from the soul, the centre, ever dissed your flow, I meant to”.
Once again showing the versatility and exhilaration in the Manchester scene, this track was initially birthed out of Fieves’ ‘Barz In Carz’ series, which has been popping off on TikTok and Instagram for a while now – think James Corden’s ‘Carpool Karoake’ but actually featuring upcoming talent of the highest calibre, and not a fake personality in sight.
Both Yves Jones and DBL A are equally gifted in their own right. Whilst Yves has released countless otherworldly garage, and drum and bass bangers, DBL A is a master behind the mic, and it’s a musical match up that, if anything, should’ve happened sooner.
As Manchester’s scene continues to prosper, there aren’t many cities doing it better, and these two are just further proof of that.
