Sally's Heartbreak Picnic
JoeJas is a storyteller, a world builder. His music videos offer a gateway into the cosmos of FAT LLAMA, the title under which Joe releases music, visuals, skate films and clothes. What you find there is an expression of his universe - often cartoonish, bizarre and wildly imaginative.
‘Heartbreak Picnic’ is the latest instalment of the ‘Sally’ series that chronicles Joe’s romantic misfortune. In the last chapter, ‘Sally’s Wheels’, we see Joe’s love interest Sally brutally reject him outside New Cross Morleys. Now, we find him channelling the vibe of Summer 2020, reflective on a solitary picnic ’eating sorrow sandwiches’. He mourns his broken heart and pride but also seeks redemption and closure, the strange synths he raps over hinting at the influence of hip hop visionaries The Neptunes.
Joe’s creative vision is drawn confidently with the flair and lusciousness of a new box of felt tip pens. There is a balance of sweetness and darkness in his work, the food in his basket looks delicious but it’s plastic. Sally, the woman he yearns after, is a dead eyed blow up doll.
Both visually and sonically accomplished, ‘Heartbreak Picnic’ shows an increasing maturity and refinement in Joe’s work, without ever compromising its eccentricity and playfulness.
His new project, ‘4 Wing Island’ drops in August and we’re hungry for it.
