“Grief is the price we pay for love”. Certainly the anguish and paranoia that can develop from such a love is no better exemplified than in Ryan Trey’s first new single of 2020, ‘Rollin’, following his widely enjoyed mini EP of summer 2019 – ‘LV Smoke’ and his debut 2018 album ‘August’– which if you haven’t listened to yet, I highly recommend. 

In ‘Rollin’, Ryan wrestles with the increasingly harder issues that have arisen with his girlfriend as he contemplates where it all went wrong – “rollin back in my mind, baby”. Throughout the rest of the song, he sings about the trials and tribulations of his relationship as doubt floods and overpowers his mind towards his girlfriend’s motivations.

The music video aesthetically captures the imagination of ‘Rollin’, from engaging camera spinning angles that heighten the turmoil as Ryan and his girlfriend sit tensely in his car to vibrant cinematography brimming with rich texture as we’re shown the innermost, vulnerable moments of their relationship.

Raised between St Louis and Washington D.C., Ryan Trey, 21, is continuing to show us why he is deservedly the new R&B sensation to demand our attention. Ryan blends his voice between Hip Hop and R&B with tangible substance, establishing his uniqueness within the genre. With the anticipation of his sophomore project slated for release later in the year, 2020 just got brighter with the re-emergence of Ryan Trey.
