He’s Not Into You
Opening with slick, soulful RnB production from Paya Beats, you could be fooled into thinking you’re about to hear a classic heartbreak ballad. Enny’s off-kilter lyrics “He might be into girls or dudes and Nike shoes/But he’s just not that into you”, cut through the sweet, soaring harmonies with a wit and charm that shows she’s far from predictable.
‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ are famous words written by a man. But let a woman speak and she’ll show you she was too good for him in the first place. Thamesmead’s Enny has been wronged, but her introspective, funny and very catchy debut tells us that she’s got it right, “Sis, Let me tell you, always put you before a dude” she sings as the tune reaches its climax over a telling sample of Deniece Williams’ ‘Free’.
Even at her most cutting, Enny exudes warmth. It belies a magnetic energy which has already been picked up on by prolific members of the London scene. Mercury prize-winning and sadly, recently deceased, rapper Ty heard her by chance last January. Struck by Enny’s sound he asked her to support him at Camden’s Jazz Cafe - her debut performance. Encounters like this set the pace for a star ready to rise. ‘He’s Not Into You’ shows that Enny has a sound for the masses but she stays true to herself. And we’re very into it.
