Halfway to the Moon

‘Halfway to the Moon’ by female artist collective Her Songs feels like a lullaby; the simple, soothing tune incorporates a jazzy feel with hints of indie and new R&B that you’d recognise on any Spotify playlist worth its salt. Despite a somewhat confusing name choice (trying to look up ‘Her Songs’ shows pretty much only results from popular R&B singer-songwriter H.E.R.), Her Songs shows promise of a cool collaboration between female-identifying artists from all over the world. Aptly titled ‘Halfway to the Moon’ incorporates artists from several continents, including familiar face Emily C. Browning, whose infectious song ‘Lover’ with Tree Theater I’d swayed along to when it first came out.

The song itself is so calm and floating that it almost sounds like a meditation; a chorus of the voices joining in a slow crescendo that builds up to an unexpected wailing guitar ending––not unlike the ending of a Kate Bush song (speaking of feminine power!). ‘Halfway to the Moon’ is a sweet, honeyed melody, with a hint of energy at the end that proves Her Songs can indeed go as up- or down-tempo as they please. I love the idea of the group as a global entity––perfect at a time when togetherness is such a precious thing.
