Culver
21 year old South-West Londoner, Lloyd Macdonald, musically known as Mac Wetha, is known for his collaborations with bands such as Scoundrel and Death Pigs, but now he is blazing a new trail as a solo act with brand new single ‘Culver’. Entirely self-produced from his own bedroom, ‘Culver’ is an intimate, affecting track capturing Mac’s recollection of his first time in L.A. Accompanied by a laidback, vibey guitar tempo, Mac croons in autotune as he laments “This city bugs me out/Long grey drives in the beaming heat” referring to the endless traffic jams people find themselves in L.A; a perspective that is often negated in the paradisiacal notion of the Californian sunshine state. He then proceeds to contemplate a newfound romance by questioning “If I didn’t want you to stay/ Would you dance the night away?” expressing the raw vulnerability of pining for the affection of someone without guaranteed reciprocity.
The music video has got a very warm feel to it, and according to WithGuitars article by Jo Peters, was filmed by Mac Wetha and his girlfriend, Daniela Monteiro. He states “I live next to a park, so we decided to shoot it there at sunrise. We got up at 4.30AM, had finished shooting by 6AM, and delivered the finished film by 11AM”. This homemade video accompanied by the smooth ‘Culver’ single, marks an exciting turn for Mac Wetha and more experimental music that I’ll surely be checking in for.
