Composure

Clinical flows pierced by blindingly venomous rhythms. Shumba Maasai is a Zimbabwe-born rising star in the underground hip-hop scene. His passionate delivery is as awe-inspiring as it is deadly. In his new track ‘Composure’, I think it’s safe to say he maintains his icy cool throughout.

Enveloped by apocalyptic bass and crisp production, it feels like Shumba is preparing for war. The grimy production and menacing atmospheres created are fantastic. Paired with Shumba’s dynamism, the track accelerates into deconstructed club territory with shuffling drums and skipping basslines. The melodic chants really transport the listener into a cryptic world of ethereal devastation.

The simple song structure plays into Shumba’s hands so effectively it is difficult to ignore. The isolation of bass and distant roars creates space for Shumba to take centre stage, leaving the listener constantly on edge.

With tracks like these, I would not be surprised if we end up seeing Shumba Maasai featured on a Hollywood soundtrack. Cinematic does not even begin to describe his presence.
