Bridgeland Road
Harrowing... The first word that springs to mind, quickly followed by – POWERFUL. Guvna B has returned and is due to release his new 12 track album The Village Is On Fire in May this year (available to pre-order now). He begins with his first single ‘Bridgeland Road’ Ft Emmy award winning actress and screenwriter, Michaela Coel and he did not come to play. Speaking on his unfortunate experience of an unprovoked act of violence against him in August 2021, Guvna B guides us through with a brilliant visual to further enhance his words. Racism, failed justice system, prejudice, gentrification, multitude of emotions... all woven into an intricate depiction from Guvna B’s eyes and words.
Having music as a comfort and catalyst is blatantly evident in Guvna B’s tone and lyricism. The pain and disappointment he felt at that time is still clearly identified in his creativity in present day. He paves the way for approaching deeper conversations regarding the societies we are in. Can we trust the system? Are we really protected? Did we do the right thing? What needs to change? Why hasn’t it already been done? How do we make peace with whatever outcomes we face?
Just a reminder that this is the first release from Guvna B’s album. It’s probably then safe to say, the following 11 tracks are looking promising and just as strong. Welcome back!
